Week after week we have been working on our SLE's and have not stopped.I think I have finally got my final draft and my last paragraphs; here are my last two paragraphs Many may think that technology could not help grow ones faith, but really it can help in s many ways. Generally speaking technology can be used to look up bible quotes and help one find those quotes in seconds by simply just searching. Another example of technology being helpful with growing your faith would be by being able to easily get updates about important news about the Catholic Church, also you could easily find information on the Catholic Church and easily learn about when Jesus was alive. For example there is a television series called “The Bible” which easily gives information about the bible and Jesus by simply just watching a television show. I think this is a great thing because the bible has loads of information in it but the book is so long. The series would make it a lot easier to learn about the bible with more detail, in a shorter amount of time. Technology makes it so much easier to simply learn about your faith without any trouble. There could be an endless amount of uses for technology to help with education. There seems to be no limit to that. I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for the future students, as well as technology that will be created to help the students. Technology is taking over and soon there will be no teachers. Schools will probably be all online. But as Bill Gates has said, “Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is most important.” I hope that technology never takes over schools because just being face to face with a teacher helps the student understand the material better. I truly never see a limit to what technology can do.
In my SLE i have been writing about how technology can help in education and how it makes teaching so much easier. There are so many other ways technology can be used to help out students. Another example that sticks out to me is tutoring through a live audio chat, or video chat. For instance, there is a website called chegg.com that has tutors that are able to video chat and audio chat with individuals if they are having trouble in school. I really like this idea because you can get actual teachers that can help if you are struggling with a class and you can stay at home and speak to them through a laptop or tablet. This can be really helpful for students that just have enough time to go somewhere to see a tutor or stay at school longer then they need to. Although there are so many ways that the internet can help you applications on devices can really help out. Books can be such a struggle for students with all the weight on their backs and having to buy all the books but because of technology your able to download big books onto your device without adding weight to your back. For example, all Apple devices are able to download books straight from their app store. Other devices other devices such as the Amazon Paperwhite are able to download books and it is specifically meant for books. The Amazon Paperwhite is different than the others because it really gets the reader to read it better as if it was a book because they made it have the same look as any other book and able to turn the page like regular books. I think this is very helpful for every student and just someone who wants to read because it takes all the weight away from a book and makes it a lot more accessible. Technology has endless uses for education and keeps improving.
These past couple weeks we have benn improving and editing our SLE's. The SLE's are the student learning Expectations and I chose the topic of how technology helps with education, for example i wrote: Although technology does not seem like something that can help grow your faith, it really is. This week we had to write an essay for the Diego Baza scholarship. I really like writing these essays because we’re able to talk about personal things and relate them to their problem and also let them know what we've been through and how our faith is there to help. There are many examples in my life of how Faith helps us have courage. There are also many examples just throughout the world today. Some examples can be that is someone is sad because of something they can pray and ask for help and their faith can help them through rough times. Faith is a very powerful thing and can do so many things and so many things can be accomplished especially though christ. There are many examples of having courage because of faith in my life. An example in my life was pretty recently when my uncle died. During that time it was pretty rough in my family and everyone was sad. I had many stages during death of denial and just sadness. After a couple of days I realized that he would be in a better place and would no longer be sick. I realized this because of my faith and my faith tells me that we will have eternal life and I realized that and it made me feel comfort and I felt more courages because of my faith. My faith really helped me and my family through this rough time. Another example of faith helping me be courages during rough times would be when I was seriously hurt. I once was playing around on my trampoline and I broke my arm. During that time there was so much pain but I knew that God would help me through it and help me be courages during this time. I know that without my faith it would've been a lot harder to get through a hurtful time.
This week we made our SLE essay and I was wighting about how technology helps in education. I think its a very big need for all the schools and mainly just in education and without it it makes learning and teaching a lot harder. For example I wrote Today technology is very important when it comes to teaching and learning. In schools all over the world technology is used to help teachers teach and help students learn. There are so many other uses for it in education. For example many students go to college studying art, in that college would probably include lots of different types of technology such as cameras, computers, and so much more. Without technology learning and teaching wouldn't be as easy as it is. There are so many examples of how technology is useful in education that you couldn't name them all.In schools all over the world technology is used to help students and teachers. For example here at St. John Eudes each kid has to bring their own technology to school like a laptop or a iPad. In each class there is a smart board that helps the teachers teach and show the whole class easily. The technology really helps the teachers easily see the students work. For example in some classes students are required to have their own website where they are able to post there work and the teacher goes to their website to see it. Another way technology helps is when students have make a presentation it is as easy as one, two, three because of the technology. On their laptop or iPad they’re able to easily make a slideshow and present it on the Smart Board. There are so many other ways technology can be used not only at Saint John Eudes but in so many more schools.
This week we wrote a essay for the Luke Gaines scholarship. The scholarship gives you one-thousand dollars to help with high school. I wrote about lessons I have learned at SJE. One lesson that I have learned was to never give up. For example in my essay I said: . Through my seven years here I have had many ups and downs especially with my grades. In third grade I had a tutor that I would constantly never listen to. Once I got to fourth grade I started to dislike math and once I got to sixth I had no chance in catching back up. My grades were always low in math and had later been recommend summer school. After that year I had been moved town to a slower math class. That class I enjoyed because we almost never had tests until the next year. We had a new teacher now and he was very motivated to get us to learn the same material that the accelerated class was learning. The first couple months of this class were very tough for me because I was behind because of all the years when I would not listen. At the end of that trimester I had a B in the class and was the highest I can remember seeing my math grade. That trimester I also made the principles honors list for the first time. By the time the second trimester came I was really into math and at the end I had an A in math. This teacher really motivated me and still is while I am in this last trimester. This story is a great example of what this school and this teacher have taught me. This school will also motivate me to never give up.
This week we are watching the movie To Kill a Mockingbird. I am so far really enjoying the movie because I am a very visual person and I do not like books. I really like this movie because it gets a lot more detail in a lot shorter time than the book does. I do agree that the books can give more detail but I do enjoy watching the movies better than reading the books. In the movie it leaves out some events that were in the book. One event that was left out was when Scout was in class and the teacher saw something crawl out of Burris Ewells hair. I think that was an important event because it helped us show who the Ewells are. One part that was similar but different in the movie was when Scout, Jem, and Dill snuck into the Radley’s yard and when they ran they saw a shadow but in the book Nathan Radley came out and shot his shot gun and this time when Jem went back for his pants Nathan Radley shot. Another big event that was really left out was when the kids when the kids went to Calpurnia’s church and met Reverend Sykes and other people. They did not include that in the movie and I think that was a very important event because in the movie they meet with Reverend Sykes and if you’ve never read the book people would not know who the who he is and how they met him. Overall I enjoyed the movie and the book but I still enjoy movies over books because it takes less time to get a story explained. I really enjoyed the movie and can’t wait to read the next book and figure out what the story’s about.
This week we were had to read chapters four and five of a booklet based off St. John Eudes life. The booklet is called A Heart on Fire. In this booklet it explains big parts in his life and his path to sainthood. In the book it really gives you an idea of what he was really like as a child and why he deserved to be a saint. I have really enjoyed the booklet so far because it really explains his life and gives a different perspective on his life and what he really was like and I think that is very interesting. In those two chapter I read and learned that, in the short book we are reading about St. John Eudes it talks about his life and how he became a saint. In chapter four it says that St. John Eudes helped others and he realized that the God wanted him to be an example to others. His father sent him some news and the news was that many people were dying and suffering alone and he wanted him to help. That was when he took started praying, asking God to help everyone. In chapter five it also says that St. John Eudes was able to follow what the God had wanted him to do. He went around the world preaching to everyone. He liked to visit families in the homes. He would spend time with children, listen to the parents, and also teach them to pray together as a family. He later wrote a book. St. John Eudes book quickly became a best-seller and was republished twenty times during his lifetime. These two chapters were big parts in his life and really explained what he was doing. I am really enjoying this book and cant wait to read more.
This week we have started the draft stage of the narrative we are currently working on. The narrative we are writing has to be based around the 1930’s and based off of racism or the great depression. My narrative is about a boy named Robbie Jacobs who lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It starts of talking about him walking to his first day of school after summer break. He then is welcomed by the first grade teacher, Mrs. Wilson. Mrs. Wilson leads him to the class room where he is then greeted by a short boy in his class named James Brown. Robbie had no idea that James was going to be a big part in his life. After school Robbie walked home and the next day his father said that there was a storm coming and he should get an umbrella. This is foreshadowing that something bad was going to happen. Robbie then had another day of school and came home and heard his parents talking about how they will survive. That was as far as I have typed so far but I have thought about what will happen next. What will happen next is that after two years the school wold have closed and his parents could barely afford the house until after five years they loose it and are now living on the streets. They ten have to steel food from farms near by. One day after living in the streets for ever and not having enough food the parents are practically mentally insane and they get in a fight and the dad pulls out a gun and shoots her. Two years later he kills himself because he can live with himself for putting his family on the streets plus killing his wife. Robbie is now alone on the streets as a fourteen year old because it has already been seven years. He then finds a family, the Browns. He lives with them for three years and they finally get a house and Robbie is now their adopted child and it ends with him going to his first day of school. I think that this is a great way to practice for high school by using lots of dialogue and long stories. I am glad we are doing this to help prepare us for high school.
This week we had to prepare an oral presentation for a group and Ms. Stronks. We had to answer a whole packet on three different poems and we would then chose a question from the packet and expand the answer making it a minute and a half to a two minute long presentation. I chose a question where I had to define what a word meant by using the rest of that line to guess what that word meant. This whole thing was to prepare us for presentation we will present in from t of staff and family and friends later at the end of the yer. I think this was a great way to prepare us. After some work I made this short paragraph about that question. In the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, Frost talks about being in a forest durning fall with the leaves all yellow and choosing between two roads to travel on and chooses the one less traveled. The poet Robert Frost wrote a line in the poem saying “In leaves no step had trodden black.” In this line by using clues from the rest of the stanza and line I can imply that the poet is walking around in the forest. I can also guess what the meaning of the word trodden means to be walked on because in the line they have the word step and it is talking about walking so this could give a clue that the word trodden means to be walked on. After looking up the definition of trodden I realized my guess was correct because the actual definition of trodden is to walk in a specified way. I think that Frost did a great job with including good vocabulary and getting the reader to think.
