Glossary of Poetic Terms
Define the following terms as they apply to poetry. Find examples in the text as your read "Love That Dog" - cite examples with quotes and page numbers.
Alliteration - when the same letter happens on closely connected words;
" and jumping up on me
his shaggy straggly paws."(p.46)
Assonance - When the sound of a vowel repeats;
"Blue car, blue car, shining bright
in the darkness of the night:
who could see you speeding by
like a comet in the sky?"(p.8)
Figurative Language -Not meanig it ;
"as if they were saying
Me! Me! Choose Me!
I'm the best one."(p.26)
Hyperbole - Exaggeration;
"And they will shout Car!"(p.32)
Irony - emphatic effect
"But it was too late
because the
blue car blue car splattered with mud
hit Sky
thud thud thud
and kept on going
in such a hurry. " (pg.70-71)
Imagery - photo anything visual
"I liked those
small poems
we read today." (page 15)
Metaphor - comparison without "like" or "as"
" Maybe the wheelbarrow poet
was just
making a picture with words." (pg.22)
Meter - rhyming pattern of poetry
" Blue car, blue car, shinning bright
in the darkness of the night:

Narrator - A narrative poem

Onomatopoeia - the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named

and kept on going
in such a hurry. " (pg.70-71)
Personification - qualities of a person to something that isn't human
"The bulletin board
looks like its
blooming with words
with everybody's poems
up there
on all those
colored sheets of paper
yellow blue pink red green." (page 77)
Point of View - the narrator's position in relation to the story being told
"Okay
I guess,

Rhyme - two words that correspond

Rhythm - one of two or more words or phrases that end in the same sounds
