Pope Saint John Paul II was born on May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland. His given name was Karól Jozef Wojty. He was the youngest of three kids. He got most of education in secret while in Nazi occupied Poland. He was ordained as a priest in 1946. Pope Saint John Paul was ordained has a bishop in 1958. He was then appointed archbishop of Kraków 1964.
During his papacy he was very instrumental in the downfall of Communism in his home country of Poland. He also made trips to 129 countries. He has traveled more than any other pope. He was the first pope to visit the white house. Pope Saint John Paul II feast day is October 22. He was the third longest reigning pope. He was the pope for 26 years. He spoke 8 different languages. He tried to work with and improve relations with other world religions. He canonized more saint then any of his modern day predecessors. He was most popular pope in recent memory.
Pope Saint John Paul II died on April 2, 2005. His final words translated in English were, “Allow me to depart to the house of father.” After his death people started calling him John Paul the Great. His formal beatification ceremony was on May 1, 2011. Pope Saint John Paul II performed his first miracle in 2006 when he cured a nun of Parkinson’s disease. He performed his second miracle in Costa Rica when he healed a woman of a brain aneurysm. All of these factors have led to him being canonized as a saint.
