Pope Saint John XXIII
Pope Saint John XXIII was born on November 25, 1881, in Italy. His name was Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. He was the third born son of Giovanni Battista Roncalli. He was one of the children out of thirteen. When he was little he worked on the farm with his family. When he was 12 he the seminary at Bergamo. He was the Italian army and then returned to the seminary.
Pope Saint John XXIII was ordained a priest in 1904. In 1925 he was ordained a bishop. He was than elevated to the College of Cardinals in 1953. In 1958 he was elected as Pope John XXIII at the age of 76. He was one the most popular popes of all time. He served as a military chaplain in World War I. He founded a hostel for students in Bergamo. He was nominated for archbishop of Areopolis and apostolic visitator to Bulgaria in 1925. He became cardinal-patriarch of Venice in 1953 and he was planning to retire there. In 1958 he was called to Rome for the conclave to elect the new pope. This conclave was the one that elected him as pope.
The first time he spoke as pope he mentioned world peace and bringing Christians back to the church. In his coronation address he said that it was his intention to be pope because "all other human gifts and accomplishments—learning, practical experience, diplomatic finesse—can broaden and enrich pastoral work but they cannot replace it." He did many good things in a lot of things in a short amount of time. He was a wonderful pope and was very holy with much love in his heart. He died a pope on June 3, 1963. When he died a newspaper drawing showed the world in mourning and said "A Death in the Family." He became a saint on April 27, 2014. He was a wonderful pope and was very holy with much love in his heart.
