“The Lottery” Summary
The short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson takes place in a small village on June twenty-seventh during summer. It tells the story of townspeople who are superstitious and want to get the lottery over with. They must fight against death in order to stay alive. First, everyone gathers in the center of the village to start the lottery. Then, kids start to collect stones for a reason not yet said. After that, the head of each family is called up to pick a name out of the black box. Next, they call the names of the Hutchinson family. Finally, Tessy then argues that the lottery is not fair and is set up. As the story ends, everyone gathers around her with their stones and kills her.
