Making a Difference
There are many similarities between Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis but they are also different in many ways. Pope Saint John Paul II was born on May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland. His birth name was Karól Jozef Wojty and was the youngest of three kids. He was ordained as a priest in 1946 and was later ordained as a bishop in 1958. He made trips to 129 countries and was the first pope to visit the white house. Pope Saint John Paul II’s feast day is October 22. He was a pope for twenty-six years which was the third longest. Pope Saint John Paul II died on April 2, 2005. His final words translated in English were, “Allow me to depart to the house of father.” Pope Saint John Paul II performed a miracle when he cured a nun of Parkinson’s disease, he performed his second miracle in Costa Rica when he healed a woman of a brain aneurysm, his third miracle was when he was shot and survived. Throughout all of his time as a pope he one big mission that he wanted to fulfill which was he wanted to end abortion. This is an important mission because people are killing unborn babies that are still human beings and children of God. Pope John Paul II was truly worthy of becoming a saint.
Pope Francis is also very important and has missions he wants to finish just like Pope John
Paul II. Pope Francis was born on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His birth name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio and was oldest of two brothers and two sisters. He later became a cardinal on February 21, 2001 and then was ordained pope on March 13, 2013. Within the two short years of him being pope he has already made history. For example on September 17, 2015 after landing in the U.S. Pope Francis addressed congress which was the first time. He also had six million people come to his mass in the Philippines which broke the previous record for the world’s biggest outpouring of papal devotion. Pope Francis’ mission is also to end abortion. Both popes are loved by millions around the world because they are both so loving and caring.
Although they had their differences they also had some similarities. Both popes believe in ending abortion because they both believe everyone is a child of God and deserves to live. Both popes also were two of the four popes to visit the U.S. and both believed in the Golden Rule. Both the popes loved the poor and cared for them and also loved children and would reach out to them giving them hugs and blessing them. Surprisingly also both popes enjoyed soccer and Pope Francis also played earlier in his life. Both popes changed and made a difference in the world while sending out much love to us.
