"The First Day" Summary
The short story "The First Day" by Edward P. Jones takes place near the 1950s. It's about a little black girl and her mom that sounds like they moved to a new city and it is her first day of school. The girl does not know anyone and she is thinking of making friends. When they get to the school the mom was giving her information so she could sign her daughter up but when the woman at the desk realized where they lived, she said that they don't teach kids form there. The mom was frustrated, the woman was probably lying because she did not want any black children at her school. The mother told the girl they would just go to another school.
When they got to the school the mom took out many papers, the daughter had never seen her mom pull out so many papers. The woman at the desk then gave the mother papers to fill out about her daughter. The mother asked for help but the woman did not understand. The mother said she could not read. The woman then understood and helped the mother fill out the papers. After they filled them out it was time for the girl to go to class. The mother gave her a kiss. She then said to stay there. She left and the girl could hear her mother feet on the ground slowly walking away.
